There has been a recent flood of information and mis-information spread across social media platforms stating the City of Athens is attempting to dictate who residents will use for their garbage disposal service. Residents who participate in their city government and attend council meetings know the facts of this possibility.

Beginning July 1, 2021, brush pick up will be done every other Monday of the month.
Due to city rules and regulations, we ask that all tree debris be no more than 6’ long and 6” in diameter to allow pick up by our city workers.
Those wishing to run for office in The City of Athens in the upcoming April election can pick up petition packets by calling 217/636-8429 and arranging a pick up time at City Hall. Due to previous City Council positions being vacated and appointments being made, please ensure you specify if you are running for one of the 2-year terms. The following positions are open for election and their term expiration date is listed:
The Athens Community Park building will be open for voting on Tuesday, Nov 3rd from 6:00am - 7:00pm.
The Animal Abusive Protection Program Pet Pantry is open for business! A huge thank you to Jim Roles for designing, building and donating the new pantry.
On Monday the Athens City Council voted to adopt a Small Business Stimulus plan in an attempt to help some of our City’s small businesses that weren’t able to qualify for any state or federal assistance during this difficult time. The application and information on the plan is available on our City website. I’d like to thank Alderman Chris Reichert for coming up with this wonderful plan and the rest of the council for their overwhelming approval of it.
Athens parks are open (effective immediately) for walking, biking, etc. We regret to inform you at this time that the basketball courts and playgrounds are still closed due to Covid 19. Please ensure you follow Governor Pritzker's Executive Order in regards to masks, social distancing, etc. Thank you.
