Hydrant Flushing
5/23/2025
The City of Athens Water Department will begin its annual fire hydrant flushing program on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. This routine maintenance is scheduled to continue for several weeks.
Hydrant flushing is an essential part of maintaining the City’s water system. It ensures hydrants are operational for fire protection and helps remove built-up sediment from the water mains, improving overall water quality and system reliability.
What Residents Can Expect:
During and shortly after flushing, customers may notice the following temporary side effects:
- Discolored Water: Flushing stirs up naturally occurring minerals and sediments in the water mains. While not harmful, the water may appear yellow, brown, or rust-colored. Residents experiencing discolored water should run cold water from a faucet for several minutes until it clears.
- Reduced Water Pressure: Temporary drops in water pressure may occur in the areas where flushing is being conducted.
The City of Athens appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation during this important maintenance activity.
